CPU lives up to 'tourism site' title

Central Philippine University has proven once again that it is worth its “Tourism Site” citation which was awarded to the university in 2001.

From June 1, 2005 to March 15. 2006, approximately 5,550 students , faculty members, and tour coordinators from 53 schools around Panay have toured the campus.

Favorite spots of the visitors included the Butterfly Garden, Henry Luce III Library, Appropriate Technology (APPROTECH) Building, Speech Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, and the University Computer Services Center.

The campus tours help in promoting the University as a whole to future Centralians.

LEGACY OF MARTYRS

A Milestone of CPU’s Art Scene

The absence of Fine Arts Program in the university is not much a hindrance for Centralians to excel in the field; it is simply a breeding ground for a faith that triumphs. in an unlikely environment, the Lord’s Hand proves to be working mysteriously victorious beyond our comprehension for such humble upbringing produced our local and national awareness in the visual arts that immortalized what the CPU founders stood for during the centennial “Legacies of Martyrs” exhibit. Held at Henry Luce Library on January 6-February 3, this well-curated art show was initiated by Asst. Prof. Lucell Larawan, founder-mentor of the Hebron Artists. The committee on this centennial activity was chaired by Vice President for Administration Rev. Joniel Howard Gico.

The Hebron artists who exhibited their artworks were Asst. Prof. Larawan, Rymer gengoni (BS Software Eng3), Jezrel Casandra (BSC Management alumnus), Harry Mark Gonzales (co-opted, co-mentor), Nygel John Melitado (AB MC 4), and Melis Erbas (BST alumna).

In his speech during the lunching, Asst. Prof. Larawan said, “Whatever achievements you see in this show including the awards earned by the Hebron Artists are not products of a FIne Arts course offering nor are influenced by a good environment for the visual arts. They sprang from pure faith that dares to go on and refuses defeat... though I have made risks of failure, I delight that daring faith has been honored.”

PIC organizes "Pool of Editors"

Pursuant of its mandate to serve as a center for approval of publications and press releases on campus, the Publication and Information Center (PIC) has organized this year, a "Pool of Editors", mostly Centralians, to lend help/offer their expertise in editing books and other publications to would-be authors among faculty and staff of the University.

Since the University constituents are encouraged to publish more books befitting and is required, of an academe, hence, this group of experts who would be on-call, depending on who the author would choose from among the roster provided by the Center.

Dr. Elma Herradura, Mrs. Lucy de la Fuente, Dr. Fely David, Mr. Demy Sonza, Rev. Efren Burgos, Dr. Anita Illenberger, Assoc. Prof. Hope Patricio, Asst. Prof. Mary O' Penetrante, Miss Aileen Traviña, Dr. Diadem Pearl Equiña, Asst. Prof. R. Timothy Pesquera, Ms. Theresa Balofiños, Ms. Amy Villaruel, Mr. Rhys Vincent Camacho, Asst. Prof. Rea Angelica Villeza, Asst. Prof. Julynn Rico, Ptr. Jonan Castillon, Mr. Jason Pagunsan, Asst. Prof. Jessica Gargantiel, and Prof. Alpha Dofeliz Sorensen signified their interest to be in the University pool of style and technical editors.

In their first organizational meeting on March 17, 2006, the PIC Director who was presiding officer, solicited their suggestions/inputs regarding the drafting of possible general guidelines for University publications, fees, and other related matters. For instance, they concurred using the APA, 5th edition as main basis for form and style; that books are to be revised at least every five years, on the other hand, manuals are to be revised every one or two years; that while individual faculty or staff is encouraged to write books, books cooperatively done by teachers in one department are preferred for marketability; and that the subject matter/coverage for the book/textbook/manual to be published shall be decided upon by the respective departments as they are supposedly the authority in their respective disciplines.

The presiding officer pointed out that they will draft guidelines in consonance with and not to run counter to, the already established Research Publication Guidelines and the Textbook & Manual Committee Guidelines and Criteria in approving textbooks and manuals. The idea of a standard editing fee was also explored, as a guide for would-be authors and the editor of their choice. This is to help even out the "playing field", so to speak to give equal opportunity for everyone in the group to be chosen as editor.

The possibility of coming up with a Style Book for the University was likewise discussed, for instance, to contain the editors' preference for American English over British English; to come up with the standard format for writing books, manuals, research papers, term papers, book reviews, syllabi, course manuals, reaction papers, letters of application and the like; for writing the Bibliography/Reference section of books/manuals, by-lines, font size, spacing, margins, etc.; and the appropriate spelling/coinage of terms to use, etc.

Beginning school year 2006-2007, the PIC shall have put in place aforementioned guidelines and started screening publications and providing incentives to encourage more faculty and staff to write books.

CPU graduates, shine on with your Big C!
By Annabel Java-Petinglay

As the graduation day nears, CMM would like to congratulate and wish all CPU graduates good luck in your journey through life.

CMM is confident that CPU graduates given time and opportunity would really excel in their various career paths. CPU graduates would be breed apart because of the Big C (Christ) that they have known while still in the campus.

The famous Kahlil Gibran, in his response to the letter of his beloved brother Nakhli, quoted “How did those days undo themselves, and where did those nights, in which Peter lived, go? How did those hours, which Peter filled with his sweet songs and handsomeness pass away?”

But Gibran, amidst his questionings, further wrote: “Life, my dear Nakhli, is like the seasons of the year. The sorrowful Autumn comes from the joyful Summer, and the raging Winter comes behind the sad Autumn, and the beautiful Spring appears after the passing of the awful Winter”.

CPU must have provided you enough warmth and comfort with its beautiful campus and the smiling faces of your teachers that you may be feeling some sense of apprehension in leaving the portals of the great alma mater.

However, fear not for always the beautiful Spring appears after the awful Winter. Life is a constant moving on.

So shine with your Big C!

Congressman Salceda clarifies EVAT
PIC head attends briefing

Congressman Joey Salceda, Chairman, House Committee on Economic Affairs presented among others, concerns regarding the extended value-added tax or EVAT during the "Advocacy Forum on EVAT" on February 24, 2006 at the Iloilo Grand Hotel. Publication and Information Center (PIC) Director Felnor G. Importante attended the briefing in behalf of Central Philippine University.

Value-added tax or VAT is a consumption tax imposed on the sale or importation of goods and services. This is not a new tax since most goods and services are already subject to VAT. But reforms in the VAT system (RA 9337) are still needed to increase government revenues.

Salient features of RA 9337 include: an increase of VAT by 2% (from 10% - 12%); and the goods and services now subject to VAT are petroleum products and other indigenous fuels, power and electric cooperatives, services rendered by doctors, services rendered by lawyers, domestic carriage of passengers by air and sea, non-food agricultural products, and works of art, literary works, and musical compositions.

The extended value-added tax or EVAT is seen to sustain and increase the government's delivery of basic services, address the country's budget deficit, help pay foreign debt obligations, provide infrastructure and capital outlay, and help reduce poverty, among others.

The VAT system recognizes the needs of the poor and exempts basic commodities and socially sensitive products from VAT. Among the VAT exempt commodities are: agricultural and marine products in their original state such as vegetables, meat, fish, fruits, eggs, and rice; lease of residential houses not exceeding P10,000.00 monthly; sale of low-cost house and lot not exceeding P2.5 million; educational services rendered by both public and private educational institutions; books, newspapers, and magazines; and sales of persons and establishments earning not more than P1.5 million annually, which could include sari-sari stores, carinderias, and street vendors.

The EVAT should not affect the poorer segment of society since the services rendered by doctors in government (public) hospitals, as well as the services of lawyers from the Public Attorney's Office, will remain free. Also, doctors and lawyers in the provinces who do not earn more than P1.5 million annually would be VAT exempt.

Since VAT is a consumption tax, its burden falls heavier on those who consume more VATable goods and services. The less one consumes, the less VAT he pays.

(-Based on the PIA notes/handouts distributed during the briefing)

CPUHS class '56 donates PA system to CPUDHS

The CPU Development High School Class 1956, on the occasion of their 50th Graduation Anniversary, donated a Public Address and Sound System to the CPU Development High School. The Public Address and Sound System were donated in loving memory of Mr. Eleuterio D. Plagata, Sr. who served as HS Principal from 1938-1941 and 1946-1965. A simple but meaningful Dedication Service was held last Saturday, March 18, 2006 at the High School building.

Engr. Edgar Mana-ay, Class -56 representative, explained that they are the first batch to give a donation in memory of Mr. Plagata, who was also one of the longest serving principals of the department. Mr. Plagata's son Eleuterio Plagata, Jr., also a member of class '56, gave the response in behalf of the family. He was teary-eyed as he thanked his classmates for recognizing his father's faithful service to the school. Dr. Fabula accepted the donation for the university and also offered the dedicatory prayer.

Close to 20 members of HS Class '56 attended the service. Hugs and laughters were shared as their high school adventures were brought to mind. The presence of Ms. Nona Dominado, their former teacher and also a former HS principal, made the affair more meaningful. HS Asst. Principal Rone Grace Sulit also graced the affair.

This dedication service was only one of many activities Class '56 had lined up to celebrate their 50th graduation anniversary. They joined the HS Dedication Sunday last March 19, 2006, where Dr. Majella Caipang-Palacios, one of their classmates was Dedication Speaker. On Monday, they trekked to Boracay Island to continue their revelry.
