CPU holds Christmas Party
by Jason Pagunsan

It rightly started with a Christmas worship service and ended with a special presentation from the different colleges and departments. It was a fun and a wholesome experience.

On that hot December 15, 2000 afternoon, the full force of the faculty and staff of the university convened at the Alumni Promenade-Concert Park for their Christmas party.

During the worship, the Seminary Chorale of the College of Theology rendered a musical offering while the Rev. Dennis and Diane Plourde gave the Christmas message.

After the worship service, a MOA signing between President Acanto and the Rev. & Mrs. Juan Ancheta regarding a scholarship in the College of Theology.

Cash incentives were also given through President Juanito M. Acanto to employees with the longest stay in the university and to the deserving hardworking staff identified by a committee tasked to evaluate the same.

The snacks were catered by alumna Beth Ponteras-Nepomuceno.

Dr. Luisito Conducta - drums, Dr. Diadem Pearl S. Equiña - keyboards, Ptr. Rudel Dianela - bass, Engr. Alexis Belonio - guitar, and Mr. Joel Somocira, vocals entertained the party goers.

A Smile is the best calling card.

A smile is the best calling card. A sincere, warm smile will disarm even the most unpleasant of individuals. One of the fundamental laws of life is that of reciprocity. Because it is a simple law it is one that is often ignored. This law, when practiced, has a chain reaction effect. Snarl at a man when you are first introduced and he will react to you in like manner. Humans respond to one another emotionally instead of ‘thinkingly’, thus, petty jealousies, hate, bruised egos, fights and wars.

It is important how you greet others. Their first impression of you is based on your words, deeds and general appearance. Always greet people in a friendly way, regardless of their attitude toward you. Life is action and reaction. Take the initiative, smile, be pleasant. You will soon find that others will react to your friendly approach and smile back.

There is a simple story that highlights the above philosophy. A teacher wished to express the action-reaction idea to his class. He handed a young boy and girl five pennies each and told them to go separate ways and to throw away a penny each time they met someone who smiled.

Eventually, the youngsters returned. The young boy still had in his possession all five pennies. The young girl had given away hers. The boy complained that the people he met did not smile. ‘But all mine did’, cut in the girl, ‘because I smiled first.’ Therein lies the secret; if you want the world to smile at you, take the initiative and smile first.

Movie stars win fans by their sincere, warm ad friendly smiles. A smile breaks down another’s coldness. Smile and often. (Brian Adams, "How to Succeed")
