Padernilla  receives Gintong Sikap award  

Mrs. Evangelica Padernilla, retired principal of CPU Elementary School, was recipient of the Gintong Sikap Award  from  the Federation of Filipino Consumers, Inc. (FFCI) in a fitting ceremony held at the Manila Hotel on December 19,1999.  

FFCI is a non-stock charitable organization which recognizes selected personalities throughout the country for their outstanding contribution to the society through meritorious accomplishment in chosen line of profession, civic and humanitarian services rendered to their fellowmen and business leadership which have contributed to the economic building of the nation.  

The awardees were chosen based on the following criteria: meritorious accomplishment in chosen field of endeavor; proven competence and integrity; dynamic leadership; importance of his/her position entrusted traits and characteristics,; and spirit of social and civic responsibilites.  

CPU administrators prepare 
SY 2000-2001  plan 

A strategic planning seminar – workshop was held on November 18,1999 at Amigo Terrace Hotel to prepare the development plan  of Central Philippine University for SY 2000 – 2001. Led by the university president Juanito M. Acanto, the whole day activity was participated in by administration officers, deans, principals and heads of various departments/units.  

The facilitators of the seminar – workshop were Prof. Ricardo C. Patricio, director , Office of Planning and Development; Dean Walden S. Rio  of the College of Engineering; Engr. Aurora Alerta Lim, vice president for operations; Dr. Nathaniel Fabula,vice president for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Fely P. David, dean, School of Graduate Studies and director, Social Science Research Institute.

House deputy speaker inducts Kalantiao officers  

Hon. Daisy P. Avance-Fuentes, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, inducted into office the officers of the Senior Order of Kalantiao, a fraternity composed of law students, on 31 July at Sarabia  
Manor Hotel.  Mr. Israel Ian R. Feliciano heads the fraternity.  

Deputy Speaker Avance Fuentes was the affair’s keynote speaker.  She gave an inspirational message and shared her student life at CPU, especially when she joined the “Search for Miss CPU” as the College of Law muse.  She urged the professors, students and alumni of the College of Law to strengthen and develop Christian values and the “Central Spirit.”  

Hon. Fuentes finished her Bachelor of Laws in CPU in 1984.  She passed the Bar examinations in the same year.  She practiced in Iloilo before becoming prominent in Philippine politics in her hometown.  

Hon. Rodolfo V. Cabado, a Centralian and member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the Iloilo province was present to introduce the honored guest.  After Hon. Avance-Fuentes spoke, she handed to Atty. Zacarias D. Bedona, Jr., Dean of CPU College of Law, a check in the amount of P15,000.00 for the Law’s scholarship program.  
  

Estrada appoints 
Centralian as judge 

President Joseph Estrada has recently appointed Federico Billones, Jr. as Presiding Judge of the Panit-an Municipal Trial Court, Capiz.  

Judge Billones obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from Central Philippine University in 1973.  He was the District Attorney of the Public Attorney’s Office at Roxas City before his appointment.  

According to Atty. Zacarias D. Bedona, Jr. Dean of CPU Collge of Law, Judge Billones was a classmate of Judge Edgardo Catilo, Executive Judge/Presiding Judge, Branch 56, Regional Trial Court, Himamaylan, Negros Occidental, and Judge Manuel Sollesta, Presiding Judge, Municipal Circuit Trial Court of Surallah-Banga-Tantangan, South Cotabato.  

4 attend FFW seminar 

Four officers and members of the CPU Rank and File Union (RAFLU) attended the Seminar on Labour Migration which was held at the Manila Traders Hotel on November 7-8, 1999. The seminar aimed to consolidate the conclusions of the Needs Assessment seminars previously conducted in collaboration with the Department of  Labor and Employment.  

Led by Mrs. Grace Savella, RAFLU president, the other participants were Myrna B. Abototo, Delma Umadhay and Rinaliza Miole. After the seminar, they attended the symposium on Constitution and Democracy which was held in the same venue the following day. The forum was a major initiative under  
the current CNV-FFW Project on Realizing Substantial Democracy through
