VP Macapagal-Arroyo graces 17th Zaldivar memorial gab

The 17th Justice Calixto O. Zaldivar  Memorial Lecture was held at the University Church on December 14, 1999 with no less than the Vice President of the Philippines, Hon.  Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo,  as the guest speaker. Undersecretary Sally Zaldivar-Perez of the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office served as over all coordinator.

The annual lecture is a joint undertaking of the Justice Calixto O. Zaldivar Foundation and Central Philippine University in memory of the late justice, a consummate defender of civil and political liberties who also promoted social sciences in addition to his work in religion, law, government and statemanship areas.

National  figures such as Senate Presidents, Speakers of the House, Chief Justices, Members of the Cabinet and exemplary education leaders have since graced the lecture.

Zaldivar, an Antiqueno, enjoyed the distinction of having served three major branches of the government: in the legislative branch as a municipal councilor, as Representative to the Philippine Legislature, and as a member of the National Assembly; in the executive branch as Governor of Antique and as executive secretary of the President of the Philippines; and in the judicial branch as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

He acquired the reputation of being an independent-minded member of the court especially during the deliberations and decisions on the issues arising out of the declaration of Martial Law and the validity of the 1973 Constitution. Going against the majority opinion that the 1973 Constitution was already operational, Zaldivar asserted that the Constitution was not validly ratified in accordance with the provision of the 1935 Constitution and therefore should not be given force and effect.

CPU remembers
Dr. Linnea A. Nelson

CPU paid homage to the life, works and memory of Dr. Linnea A. Nelson through a memorial service last September 24 at the University Church.

Dr. Nelson is the American missionary who worked for 17 years as Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and later became Acting President of  the university.  She went to the Philippines in 1951 after doing missionary work in China and serving as dean of women at a seminary in Berkeley.  She died on September 4 at the age of 95.

Tasked to give short recollections on the life of Dr. Nelson were Prof. Josefina J. Ruiz, Former Chairperson of the Health and PE Department; Dr. Elma S. Herradura, Former Vice Presidents for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Juanito M. Acanto.  Dr. Johnny V. Gumban, Dean of the College of Theology gave the message.

Dr. Nelson is best remembered by later generations of Centralians through the book she co-authored with Dr. Herradura titled, “The Story of Central Philippine University.”  She came back in October 1978 and stayed in CPU at her own expense as a volunteer worker of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society and to spend time writing the book on CPU’s history.

Dr. Elma Herradura shares treasured memories of her historian partner.

Remembering Dr. Nelson, through floral offering.
