Alumni donate P200T 

Engr. Serafin Frondoza (BSChE ’67) and wife Dr. Alma Alpas- Frondoza (BS ’66) donated P200,000.00 to establish a Management Chair for Administrators of Central Philippine University effective SY 1999-2000. 

Engr. Frondoza has a very extensive experience in wood processing. He is presently the Quality Manager/Representative for Asia of the Liberty Woods International, Inc. in Sarawak, East Malaysia. Prior to this, he had worked in Mindanao. 

Dr. Alma A. Frondoza, on the other hand, worked with the Department of Health in Region 12 and became the Chief of Training for the region. 

The alumni couple also manage the Spring of Joy Resort in Guimaras and  have been deeply involved in outreach work in spreading their Christian faith. They have five children namely: Oliver Orsseus Angelo, Seraphin Chrises, Cherubin Chrisus, Paulyn Pearls and Serysolle Mae. 

Cajilig-Tan shines in intl poster contest 

Rene Vergel Cajilig-Tan, junior student of CPU Development High School, continued to shine in poster making competition by placing second (Category III- ages 13 to 15) in the recent international poster contest.  

Sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 8th international  poster competition was participated in by young artists coming from 77 countries. It was a breakthrough for the participants from the Asia-Pacific region who bagged most of the awards.  

Two other young artists from the Philippines placed second and third in two other categories. These are Bernadette Mary Q. Umali, 3rd place Category I (ages  6 to 8) and Joezel Rizi T. Nubla, 2nd place Category (ages 9 to 12).  

Rene Vergel became a newsmaker when he emerged as champion in the regional elimination which was sponsored by the Commission on Population, Region VI in coordination with the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. Representing Western Visayas, he topped the national competition (Category III) which was held in Manila on July 30, 1998. In all the competitions, he was coached by Pastor Benjamin G. Amar. 

  Centralians excel in nursing board 

Graduates of the CPU College of Nursing performed well in the recent Nursing Board Examination. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) result, which was released December 12, revealed that two Centralians made it to the top 20. These were Cyril A. Amiado and Khristine Joy H. Sales who ranked 6th and 11th, respectively.  

Aside from the two topnotchers, CPU registered 94.87% passing percentage which was comparatively higher than the 57.34% national rate.

CPU  hosts electronic forum on  women and children issues  

Central Philippine University  hosted  the electronic dialogue on Trafficking of Women and Children, which was held at the Educational Media Center on October 29, 1998.  

Sponsored by the United States Information Service (USIS), the dialogue was participated in by panelists in three local sites in the Philippines - Manila, Baguio and Iloilo- who  exchanged ideas and information with the main resource speaker in Washington, Ms. Marsha Liss.  

Marsha Liss is  a trial attorney in the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section of the US Department of Justice’s Criminal Division. She oversees the Child prostitution initiative, a project aimed at stemming the trafficking of youth for prostitution in the United States and works with NGOs and professional associations to address the victim services involved in child exploitation.  

The  panelists in Iloilo were composed of the following women and children advocates: Atty. Evelyn Jiz, president, Stop Trafficking of Filipinos Foundation (STOP) -Iloilo; SP04 Erna Foerster, chief, Women & Children’s Section PNP- Iloilo City Police Office; Mrs. Aurora Habana, senior worker (SWO IV), Department of Social Welfare and Development; Mr. Christopher Montano, co-chair, Regional Council for the Welfare of Children, Region VI.  

Aside from the panelists, selected participants coming from various sectors  with women and children concerns attended the electronic dialogue. Representatives from the USIS, headed by Dr. Kenton Clymer and Susan Arcega  also joined the participants in Iloilo.  The affair was covered by EXCEL TV  of Central Philippine University.   

The forum was an out come of Susan Arcega’s visit to the Crisis Center for Women and Children (CCWC) which is based in CPU.

The electronic dialogue was made possible through the effort of a local committee headed by Mrs. Josephine Fernandez, Area Director of the American Studies Resource Center and Engr. Aurora A. Lim, vice president for operations of Central Philippine University.
