Pescos, Samson conduct another  algebra handling seminar 

Engr. Dahlia Pescos and Engr. Hernani Samson were the main speakers in another  seminar-workshop on Teaching of College Algebra for Engineering Teachers. 

Held on October 19-23 at Adamson University, the workshop aimed to help engineering teachers in Northern Luzon improve their expertise in teaching college algebra. Attended by 27 faculty members representing various engineering schools in the country, the seminar- workshop was the fifth that was handled by Pescos and Samson.  

It will be recalled that the same workshops have already been conducted at CPU for Western Visayas, University of Mindanao for Southern Mindanao, University of San Carlos for Central Visayas, and Xavier University for Northern Mindanao. These series of workshops are funded by FUSE purposely to help upgrade engineering schools improve their handling of College Algebra courses. 

Arellano  addresses Batad Polytechnic studes, faculty  

Mrs. Marcelina S. Arellano, faculty of the CPU Development High School, was the guest speaker during the Values Education Month Celebration of the Batad Polytechnic College on November 26, 1998.  

Arellano spoke on “Edukasyon sa Pagpahalaga: Daan sa Pagtatamo ng Kaunlaran sa Maayos na Kapaligiran” which was the theme of the celebration. It was attended by high school and college students and their parents; faculty and staff of the College.   

Rio undertakes dev’t planning workshop 

Dean Walden S. Rio undertook a Development Planning Seminar- Workshop for Deans of Rural Engineering Schools held recently  at the Conference Room of Henry Luce Library. 

Aimed to train the deans to prepare their own Development Plan in upgrading their respective colleges, the seminar was attended by 14 deans nationwide. Among the participating colleges were University of La Salette, Isabela; Baliuag Colleges, Bulacan; Columban College, Olongapo City; Divine Word College, Legaspi and Mindoro; Marinduque State College, Marinduque; West Negros College, Bacolod City; St. Joseph Institute of Technology, Butuan; St. Mary’s College, Davao del Norte; Cor Jesu College, Davao Oriental; Southern Mindanao College, Zamboanga del Sur and North Cotabato; Andres Bonifacio College, Dipolog City. 

The seminar- workshop was funded by the Fund for Engineering Education Development. A sequel to this seminar is being proposed for possible funding to include funds for the rural engineering schools to use when they prepare their development plan for three years. 

Peñacerrada speaks at youth confab 

Rev. Peñacerrada, senior pastor of the University Church, was the consecration speaker and installation officer in the 41st Annual Assembly of the Convention Baptist Youth Fellowship of the Philippines (CBYFP) at Queen’s Row Gospel Church, Bacoor, Cavite on October 20-24. 

Rev. Penacerrada led the delegates from University Church who composed the biggest church delegation next to the host church. He was also awarded a plaque of appreciation for having served the Convention Youth Ministry as CBYFP consultant for twelve years. 
 

 

  Fabula represents CPU in PAASCU assembly 

Dr. Nathaniel M. Fabula, officer-in-charge, Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, represented CPU in the General Assembly of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) at the Traders Hotel Manila on September 11.  

Under the theme “Accreditation: Assuring a More Coherent System for Academic Quality, “ the annual gathering of the PAASCU member schools was   graced by the new secretary of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports Bro. Andrew Gonzales who delivered the keynote address.  

From the report of Dr. Fabula, LINK learned that in that assembly, CPU was entitled to three votes in the election of seven Board of Directors whose terms will end until 2000. It can be recalled that three colleges in CPU have been accredited Level III by PAASCU. These are Agriculture, Engineering and Nursing. The next visit for the renewal of accreditation will be done early next year.  
 

Anti-Sexual Harassment convo held  
 
A special convocation on “Sexual Harassment” was held at the University Church on November 13 with Atty. Aila Rae B. Endonila as resource person. Atty. Endonila is the legal counsel of the university. 

The purpose of the convocation was to make the CPU personnel aware of the various forms of sexual harassment and help prevent/stop any violation of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1998 (RA No. 7877). 

GSC conducts peer facilitator’s training 

The Guidance Service Center, headed by Mrs. Margen A. Java, conducted a Peer Facilitator’s Training for  high school students  at the Reading Room of the CPUDHS Library. 

Aimed to train students to become peer counselors/helpers, the training was participated in by 26 junior and senior students. The Center expects that those who participated in the training will become extension of the counselor in the implementation of its programs. 

Four personnel from the Guidance Center served as resource persons, namely: Paige Huelar, Communication; Wendy Aligaen, Trust Building; Sylvia Pineda, Team Building, and: Margen Java, Principles of Counseling. 

Sonza attends media cultural workshop 

Ed Sonza, manager of EXCEL TV of Central Philippine University, attended the Media Cultural Workshop (MCW) at Amigo Terrace Hotel on September 25-26, 1998. 

The cultural workshop was sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) through the Committee of Communication (NCCOM) in cooperation with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), and Kapisanan Ng Mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP). 

Now on its third year of implementation, the MCW aims to raise Media’s consciousness and awareness on culture and the arts, increase their appreciation of the Filipino heritage, and encourage them to promote their respective localities as important cultural centers. Through the seminar-workshops, the NCCA hopes that the media will be the government’s partner in protecting and preserving Philippine culture and the arts.
