Reflections
on Stewardship

I’ve watched the number of people going
to Malacanang asking for land and money for free. It is a sickening sight.
It
is sickening because it is not right. It is not right for people to be
asking for something without working for it. And the people who are doing
the asking are healthy and strong. It may be true that not everyone is
endowed with talents. But God who created us has given us life, a beating
heart, a thinking brain, and hands to work with. On these gifts, we are
all equal. God has given us a chance to live in the Philippines where one
has the freedom to choose whatever he wants to do. With an active mind,
an active body, we can be healthy and make all the money we want. One thing
these people forgot is that, a seed has to be planted before harvest is
expected.
When God created the earth, He placed before
us everything we need to survive; everything that we need to eat, the water
we drink, the air we breath, the materials we need for clothing and the
materials we need to build houses. This is why Jesus said, “Seek and you
shall find, ask and it shall be given unto you, knock and the door will
be opened.” Jesus was positive about these things. This is because these
things we need are already all around us. All we have to do is pray that
our eyes may be opened, that God will guide us in everything we do every
day of our lives. If you are a fisherman, God will guide you to the waters
to throw your nets into where you will get maximum catch. If you are a
farmer, God will tell you what kind of product you would be planting for
a full harvest. So it is with every other profession. Further, as good
stewards, we should take good care of our heritage, our planet earth. It
is the only one we have.
Surely, God is saying, “I will give you
a source of livelihood, but I need your help. And I cannot get the help
unless you give it to me. This will build a relationship between us. Trust
me and give me a chance to prove it. I will give you an income. You keep
a bigger share, but give Me my tithe. If I cannot give you an income, you
cannot give Me anything. Give Me my share and prove Me if I will not open
the windows of heaven and pour you out such a blessing that there will
not be room enough to contain it. You cannot outgive Me.” Malachi 3:10.
To be sure, God wants us to prosper. He
wants us to prosper that we might share our prosperity with others that
together, we will praise and glorify God. I’d like to share with you III
John 1:2: “Beloved, I pray that you will prosper in all things and be in
health just as your souls prospers.”
As good stewards we ourselves, my wife
and I, have gotten into a business where we provide jobs for over a hundred
people: teachers and staff in our school, engineers and equipment operators
in land development and workers in the construction of medium and low cost
houses. In conclusion, I would like to say that one must be a sharing person
“NO PERSON CAN SUCCEED WITHOUT HELPING PEOPLE.”
