CPU stude qualifies in Go Kim Pah scholarship 

Salvador C. Dreo, Jr. , BSECE 1, is one of the 30 scholars for SY 1998-1999 of the Go Kim Pah Scholarship Program nationwide. 

Under the auspices of the Equitable Bank Foundation, Inc., this scholarship program has sent more than 250 scholars in the field of academics for the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as vocational training all over the country. 
  

CPU studes shine in journalism gab 

Three delegates from the CPU Development High School and four from the Elementary School won various awards during the Regional Elementary and Secondary Schools Press Conference (RESSPC) held in Antique on October 21-23. 

The winners with their corresponding  ranking and respective events are as follows:  High School Jovannie Paolo Gorriceta, 1st place- Photojournalism (Filipino); Jessana Carmela Lariza, 2nd place-Editorial Writing (English); Juan Manuel Mejorada, 10th place- Editorial Cartooning. 

Elementary Caroline Marie Garingalao-Ruegg, 6th place- Feature Writing (English); Vail Hyathiz A. Capulso, 9th place- Sports Writing; Jackilyn Cayshe Ocate, 8th place- News Writing (Filipino); and Nicole Primero, 9th place, Editorial Writing (English). 

Only the top ten were given the awards  in each category which was participated in by not less than 100 contestants representing various elementary and secondary schools in Western Visayas. 

Meanwhile, it was learned that Mrs. Shiela B. Sorilla, Mini Echo adviser, who led the group was elected as assistant secretary of the Regional Elementary School Paper Advisers Association in Region VI.  

6 pass ME board 

Six out of seven examinees fron CPU  have recently passed the Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examination held in Bacolod City on October 10-12, 1998. 

The new mechanical engineers from CPU are Michael Allones, Jan Marx Escosia, Alidel Francisco, Rudy Llanora, Reynold Paderes and Edilberto Tonsay. CPU registered a comparatively higher percentage (85.71%) than the national passing percentage which was 40%. Although the passing percentage was high, it did not qualify CPU to the top engineering schools because of its  very minimal number of examinees. 

Calibjo hurdles PEE exam 

Engr. Cirilo C. Calibjo, faculty of the College of Engineering, passed the recent Licensure Examination for Professional Electrical Engineers (PEE). 

Calibjo, an MS graduate of the University of the Philippines, has  underwent further studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia. The College continues to  encourage other faculty members to become a professional engineers in the future. 
 

  Mangana appointed as student affairs officer-in-charge 
Rev. Melvin M. Mangana, outgoing University Chaplain, is now the officer-in-charge, Office of Student Affairs. His appointment, which took effect last September 16, carries supervisory functions which include the following: Student Center, Student Organization Committee, Student Life Committee, Steering Committee for University Day, Cultural Affairs Committee (convocations & theatre guilds), and Work Study Service Program.  

Among his specific functions are as follows: to  serve as liaison between the students and the university administration; oversee the activities of the recognized student organizations or groups in the university including those of international students and keeps a list of their officers; draw up monthly calendar of student activities in the university community; take care of student Group Accident Insurance; provide information about on- and off- campus dormitories and boarding houses. 

Rev. Mangana is a graduate of the Convention Baptist Bible College (1985) and the CPU College of Theology (1989). A 3rd year law student, he is also working on his thesis leading to Master of Theology in Biblical Studies at the South East Asia Graduate School of Theology. 
Mangana had worked as senior pastor of Estancia Evangelical Church prior to his stint as associate pastor of the University Church. For four years, he served as  chaplain of the university. 

Narciso starts chaplaincy work 

The CPU community welcomes its new chaplain, Rev. Jerson B. Narciso who started his work effective October 1, 1998.  

An alumnus of the university (B Th ’88; M. Div ’95), Rev. Narciso has served as pastor of various churches in Iloilo affiliated with the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches, Inc. He  was also a part- time instructor of the Four Square Bible School in 1994-96 and Emmanuel Training Center in 1995-96. 

Rev. Narciso has held leadership position in both civic and religious organizations. He was chairman of the Badiangan Church and Defense Consultative Conference in 1988-90; president, Iloilo Evangelical Ministers Fellowship (1993-96); dean, Convention Baptist Ministers Association (1992-94).  
Among his other involvements at present are: member, CPU Corporation (1998-2001); president, Iloilo Baptist Ministers Association; member, Peace Commission of the National Council of Churches in the Philippines; trustee, Convention Baptist Ministers Association, Janiuay Christian Community Center, Calvario Memorial Christina School. 

Rev. Narciso is married to Medy Dagmil with whom he has two daughters, Karmina Paz and Xaren Faith, eight and six years, respectively.
