College of Education
A four- year course in Education leading to the B.S.E. degree was offered in 1938 under the College of
Liberal Arts, starting with thirty-eight students. The following majors were initially offered: English, History, Biology and Mathematics.
In 1939 the Board of Trustees voted to organize the College of Education as a separate unit and to appoint Dr. Pedro E. Y. Rio as its acting dean.
Four years later in 1941, enrollment rose to about three times its original number. It had its largest enrolment among all the colleges
in the institution after the war in 1945 until 1953. By the time the college offered other majors like General Science, Music, PE and Filipino.
In 1947 the two-year Junior Normal course was opened and was placed under
the College of Education in 1950. Enrollment reached its peak during the second semester of 1953. In 1952-1953, the B.S. Ed. Program was
opened and had its first graduates in 1954. Although enrollment had declined, it picked up again in 1961, reaching more than a thousand in 1963 until 1967.
In 1970, the following areas of concentration were opened in the B.S.Ed.
program: HE, Music, Natural Science, PE, Filipino, Pre-School Education, English and Mathematics. In 1976, the Bachelor of Science
in Foods and Nutrition (B.S.F.N.) was transferred from the College of Arts and Science to the College of Education. This program was replaced
in 1983-1984 by the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (B.S.N.D.). In the same year the B.S.E.Ed program was also placed out in favor of
Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.E.Ed). In 1986-1987, the college implemented the new Bachelor of Secondary Education (B.S.Ed.)
curriculum to replace the former BSE curriculum. During academic year 1999-2000 two new courses were offered Bachelor of Science in Hotel
and Restaurant Management (B.S.H. R.M) and Bachelor of Science in Tourism B.S.T.). The courses were initiated by the Department of Home
Economics and Nutrition. With the new courses the name of the department was changed to the Department of Home Economics, Nutrition, HRM
and Tourism. Enrollment of the college significantly increased with the offering of the new courses. During the academic year 2002-2003
the college offered its sixth course, the Diploma in Teaching, specifically designed for baccalaureate degree holders who wish to pursue
a teaching career in elementary or high school.
In 1981, the college attained its five-year accredited status, the first
among the many Colleges of Education in this area. In 1986, it was again extended another five-year accredited status. The Dept.
Education, Culture and Sports upon certification of the Federation of Accrediting Agencies in the Philippines awarded it Deregulated Status,
Level II, in accordance with MECS order # 36, s. 1984 on January 6, 1987. Six months later it was awarded Deregulated Status - Level III.
From 1987 until 2001 the College maintained the Deregulated Status - Level III.
In August 2001, all accredited courses of the University were granted Full
Autonomy by the Commission on Higher Education for a five-year period.

Department of Home Economics, Nutrition, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Tourism
The Department of Home Economics (HE), Nutrition, Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and Tourism is a
service unit of the College of Education. It offers a four-year degree program in Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM)
and Bachelor of Science in Tourism. The department likewise offers major courses in Home Economics for Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSED) and concentration
courses in Home Economics for Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEED). The department also services the nutrition courses required of Nursing students.
The department has laboratories for foods, food service, hotel management
and clothing courses. The laboratories are equipped with modern facilities to keep the students abreast of the current trends in education
and the industry. Hands-on experiences are emphasized in the various laboratory classes. It has an income- generating project called the
H.E. & Nutrition Food Service that operates the Dining Hall and serves as the foodservice laboratory. To further enrich the student's
experience, educational trips and affiliation with agencies/institutions relevant to the field of studies are arranged.
The department is electronically connected to the information
superhighway through the Internet. It boasts of a mini-library with holdings of the most recent published books in nutrition,
foodservice, hotel and restaurant management and tourism.

Department of Physical Education, and Health
The Physical Education and Health
Department serves all colleges of the University. All students in all colleges both men and women are required to take four semesters of basic P.E.
classes which meet twice a week. Instruction and training are given in the field of health, sports physical fitness, body mechanics and conditioning,
rhythmic activities and recreation. Students desiring to improve their skills are given opportunity to participate in the intramural
activities during the year. Students with advance skills are encouraged to join the varsity teams which play against other schools or
teams in the different sport competitions.
The department likewise offers minor and major courses in Physical
Education, Health and Music (PEHM) for Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSED) and also concentration courses in Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPE)
for Bachelor in Elementary Education.
