CPU recognizes Golden Lions’ new chess champions

CPU Golden Lions Chess Team together with CPU Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Irving Domingo L. Rio and CPU Sports Director, Edwin Caro Laru-an.

Central Philippine University is proud of her three grade 11 students who brought home medals from the 19th ASEAN+ Age Group Championship held on June 18-28, 2018 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City.

Newly appointed CPU Sports Director, Edwin Caro Laru-an, facilitated a courtesy call of the winners to the office of the University President. The Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Irving H. Rio, welcomed them on behalf of Dr. Robles who is in the US to attend the CPUAA global reunion. Rio expressed his appreciation and congratulated the new Golden Lions chess champions. He further encouraged them to sustain their training and aim for more rewards and excellence.

The players who were selected by Philippine teachers in the ASEAN Chess Championship included three young Centralians: Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem, who played in the Girls under 18 category and brought home a gold medal in the individual, and another gold for her team. The second player who joined the Open Under-16 category, Cyril Felrod Telesforo, won a bronze for individual, and a silver for the team. The Third player, Checy Aliena Telesforo, won a silver for the team and was a participant in the Girls Under-14 category.

The pre-final and Grand Final tournaments for the Visayas League were held in Kalibo, Aklan and Roxas City, Capiz respectively, prior to the Championships in Davao.

The training and development of the three players is under the professional watch of Coach Ronel Ballesteros who has been a CPU varsity chess player from 2005 to 2009.
